LGBTQ+ Students Abroad
Choosing a study abroad program is an exciting step, but for students who identify as LGBTQ+, it also requires careful consideration of host country laws, cultural attitudes, and safety. It is critical that you research and identify programs that are not only a good fit for your academic and personal goals, but also what it means to be LGBTQ+ in that country. Laws governing gender identity and same-sex relations vary widely across the globe. LGBTQ+ travelers may encounter discrimination, barriers to assistance, incarceration, and physical violence. Researching local laws and attitudes will help mitigate risk. Some countries have laws criminalizing homosexuality while others may have decriminalized homosexuality, but they may not have any protections against discrimination. The resources below will help you get started with your research. Please reach out to staff in the Office of Study Abroad with any questions.
